“Exuberant” 2010, a mixed-media work on paper, is a key work in my visual exploration of the rhythms and expression of contemporary, bass-heavy electronic music. I listen to these beats while I work; I dance to these beats to relax. It was a breakthrough piece.
When I draw it is this fluid energy that I try to capture on paper in an abstract, gestural manner; colours bouncing off each other and beats underscored by the weight and rhythm of lines flicking across the work. All the elements talk to each other and are influenced by other elements in the work. Discontinuity, syncopation, repetition: the visual echoes the aural.
“On Being In Love” 2018 carries those ideas into the realm of symbolism where every element employed in this abstract stained glass piece refers to that wonderful emotional state that comes with fully embracing a new relationship. Drawing is an essential part of the process of making a stained glass work. It is at this stage where many of the decisions are made as to colours, textures, types of glass, direction of pattern etc.
Although primarily a commission artist, autonomous work allows complete freedom to express my personal aesthetic language.
